Our A.I. Friedman Gallery artist for the month of April is, Holly Meeker Rom. She is an award winning watercolorist and collage artist. Her paintings are in the private collection of Hillary Clinton, as well as in Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY and other institutions. Holly has an MFA in painting from American University in Washington, D.C. We are so excited to share her amazing work with you!
Holly Meeker Rom would like to explain that her work has changed throughout her years as an artist. She started off doing Batik paintings on fabric, then in 1980 her interest in watercolor began. She was living in Park City, Utah and watched skillful watercolorists demonstrate plein air painting. She was hooked. She moved to Rye, NY in 1989 and continued to paint the local environment in watercolor. Her house portraits and landscapes of local scenes have become favorites.
In the past decade she has found her medium of watercolor shifting to include collage. Holly says there is something about the juxtaposition of torn bits of paper in the service of a design that she finds surprising and magical. She uses images from many sources, including text from Moby Dick, or topical climate change related photos of a polar bear on melting ice. The above piece was based on a photo she took and then created a collage from in her studio.
This Saturday, April 8th, from 1pm-3-pm Holly will be in our Port Chester Store for an Opening Reception. Come see Holly’s beautiful collage works in person and don’t miss a chance to meet such an accomplished artist!
