A.I. Friedman Not Closing!

17 03 2017

To Our Valued Customers, Suppliers and Employees,

On March 10, 2017 an article reported that A.I. Friedman’s store and warehouse will be closing April 30th, 2017. Nothing could be further from the truth.

We have been at our current Manhattan location since 1985 and we have grown and serviced our customers both as a retailer and as a supplier to the commercial artist in the creative industry both in New York and on the national level. Our leases for our New York City location end next year and we have been in discussion regarding several spaces that can accommodate our needs in Manhattan. We will continue our search for suitable space that fits our requirements to service our customers.

The New York State filing referred to in the article is mandated by legislation in the event of a closing or potential closing of a facility. We notified the state that if there must be a reduction in force at one of our locations, then a number of employees would be affected. If that happens, nothing will change until at least May 30th.

It is well publicized that the advertising world has undergone substantial change over the recent past and continues to do so today. Consolidation and technology have had a profound impact. As our customers across all channels change so will we.  A.I. Friedman has and will continue to reshape itself in response to the shifting landscape.

On March 13th, 2017 we went live with a new platform, NetSuite, to support our various business needs. This significant investment positions us for the future. We believe this will offer us the opportunity to best provide support to our extensive customer base and continue to provide income to our employees, over 100 dedicated individuals, many of whom have been with us for decades.

It is a different changing world – news spreads quickly and sometimes not accurately.

So glad to hear!! If you’re looking for a new neighborhood, we need art stores uptown!

Eve First

This is my favorite store for purchasing gifts for kids (aspiring artists, perhaps?) and I would hate to lose it. Also a great place to purchase unique greeting cards. Is the Westchester store also staying open because stock has been painfully low for the past month which creates a funereal atmosphere when shopping. Reassurance about the Port Chester store’s survival would be appreciated.

Yes, the Port Chester store is also staying open. The state filing mentioned only applies to the NYC store.
